LED Conversion

A common upgrade for the stock interior lighting is to switch to LEDs, as they provide brighter, crisper lighting that helps to modernize the feel of the interior.

Pod Lighting Polarity

Because filament bulbs are not polarized, their insertion direction doesn't really matter. LEDs, however, are polarized, and need to be installed in the correct orientation.

99+ Xenon HID Headlights

During the final refresh in 1999, the JDM 300ZX received HID headlights from the factory. These featured a mild visual refresh as well. Instead of the sunken charcoal housings, the "floor" of the housing was raised to provide room for the ballast (necessary to drive xenon gas bulbs). The housing was also chromed and features "XENON" lettering embossed in the mold. Additionally, the glass does not have the "nipples" that were exclusive to the North American headlights (used for the headlight aiming kits), and the flutes more or less follow the ~96+ design. Finally, a High Voltage warning sticker was added to the upper retainer.

As with most factory HID configurations, the low beam is the HID (xenon) bulb, and the high beam is a standard halogen. This is because HIDs require a delayed warmup when switching on, so flashing them on and off (as people tend to do with high beams) would be hard on the ballast and bulb.

The xenon bulb that ships with these headlights is the Philips 85122+, which is a D2S-style bulb. The 85122+ has been superseded by the 85122 according to Philips (h/t to Greg Lussier). These are 3400 lumens and they are 4200K color temperature. P32D-2 base.
