Oil Filter

Oil filters are, as their name suggests, units that filter engine oil as it passes through.

Oil filters vary widely in price and quality. Being such a vital component of the lubrication system, most owners find specific brands or models to meet their needs. Some of the more commonly accepted "good" oil filters are:

• OEM (original, pictured above)
• OEM (light blue, replacing the original after it was discontinued)
• Wix
• Mobil 1

Replacing your Z32's Oil Filter

1. Raise the car and support it safely on stands.
2. Remove the engine oil drain plug (14mm, passenger side) from the engine oil pan.
3. Let the oil drain into a suitable pan until it comes to a slow drip or stops draining completely.
4. Unscrew the old oil filter by turning it counterclockwise. Sometimes, wrapping it with a towel or using an oil filter wrench helps in its removal.
5. Drain the oil out of the old filter into a suitable pan, and dispose of it properly.
6. Fill the new oil filter with new motor oil.
7. Dip your finger in the new oil and smear some along the large O-ring on the top of the new oil filter to give it a light coat of new oil.
8. Thread it on to the oil tree, be careful not to cross-thread it.
9. When the oil filter stops turning, turn it 1/4 to 1/2 a revolution more.
10. Replace the engine oil drain plug onto the oil pan, be sure to use a new washer if possible.
11. Fill will new engine oil (check your service manual for the proper oil weight and capacity).
12. Lower the car, start it up and ensure it builds adequate oil pressure.
