Question:

Hello, I recently noticed my brake lights staying on after driving the car and also randomly going on while the car is parked and not being driven. I found a piece of a brittle rubber on the driver's side floor. I was wondering if it could be the bump stop that has broken and if that the cause of my brake lights staying on. If this is the cause, can they be replaced easily? Please let me know. Thank you! Gabby - Gabriela

Answer:

Hi Gabby, based on your symptoms and that you recently found brittle rubber bits on the floor, I would be pretty confident in saying these bump stops are the exact problem. When they go bad and crumble away, there's nothing pressing the brake light switch at the top of the pedal, which is why it causes the light to stay on (it basically thinks the pedal is always being pressed). Other than crawling around in the footwell area, they're very easy to install and basically just push into place.

After my brake lights were stuck on permanently I realized this tiny, annoying part was what I needed to replace. Luckily, CZ shipped it out fast and it was exactly what I needed. Installation works well if you seat the bumper with needle nose pliers and then pull the brake pedal toward the front of the car as hard as you can.

Description

These rubber bump stops are installed in the brake and clutch pedals. Over time they often get brittle and crumble apart, so many 300ZX owners find chunks of them on their carpet floor only to find their brake lights are stuck on or their cruise control will no longer engage.

The brake pedal uses two of these bump stops (one for the brake light switch and one for the cruise control cancel switch). The clutch pedal uses one to press against the starter inhibitor safety switch at the bottom of its throw and one at the top for the cruise control cancel switch.
