Coilovers usually refers to a spring and shock combination where the spring is mounted over the shock, on an adjustable mount. While many aftermarket shock absorbers (including coilovers) allow you to change the dampening stiffness by turning a valve (either mounted to the top of the shock or the side), coilovers also allow the user to adjust the ride height of the car on each corner, by rotating the spring's mount on the threaded body.
